The Maleb Map.
UK shelters. What they need. How to help.
Every shelter has a story. Every cat in it is waiting for someone to show up. You do not have to adopt. Showing up on a wishlist is a real thing.

The UK pet welfare system runs on the backs of small charities, stretched volunteers, and donations that never quite match the need. Shelters across the country take in thousands of cats, dogs, and small animals each year, many of them abandoned, injured, or born to strays who were never neutered.
Most shelters operate without government funding. They rely entirely on public donations, charity shop income, and the goodwill of their communities. The basics (food, litter, bedding, medical supplies) are always needed. The less obvious things (enrichment toys, scratching posts, heating pads for neonatal kittens) are just as critical.
The Maleb Map is our way of making it easier to help. Below are five well-known UK shelters and the kinds of things shelters ask for most. Needs change week to week, so check a shelter’s own website, or call, before you send anything.
Twenty percent of every Maleb’s purchase goes directly to pet welfare charities. But you do not have to buy anything to help. You can donate supplies, volunteer your time, foster, or adopt. This page exists to make all of those options visible.
Donate supplies
Check a shelter’s wishlist and send what they need most. Food, litter, blankets: the basics matter.
Volunteer
Shelters need hands. Cleaning, feeding, socialising cats, admin work. Even a few hours makes a difference.
Foster or adopt
Open your home, temporarily or permanently. Fostering frees up space. Adopting changes two lives.
Examples: what shelters often ask for
- Wet cat food
- Kitten milk
- Heating pads for newborn kittens
- Fleece blankets
- Scratching posts

How to help
You do not have to adopt to make a difference.
Donate supplies
Check shelter wishlists and donate what they need most: food, bedding, toys, and medical supplies.
Volunteer your time
Many shelters need help with feeding, cleaning, socialising animals, and administrative tasks.
Foster
Open your home temporarily. Fostering frees up shelter space and gives animals a chance to decompress in a real home.
Adopt
Give a shelter animal a permanent home. Every adoption makes room for another animal in need.
